Special Focus & Annual Themes

Information, Medium & Society – The Publishing Studies Research Network is brought together by a shared interest in investigating publishing practices as distinctive modes of social knowledge production. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. As a Research Network, we are defined by our scope and concerns and motivated to build strategies for action framed by our shared themes and tensions.

Information, Medium & Society: Twenty-Fifth International Conference on Publishing Studies features research addressing the following annual themes. Each year we also focus on a Special Focus that presents a timely challenge.

  • 2027 Special Focus—Mediated Worlds: Platforms, Infrastructures, and the Making of Social Reality
  • Theme 1: Editorial Judgment, Trust, and Knowledge Authority
  • Theme 2: Platforms, Infrastructures, and Publishing Workflows
  • Theme 3: Libraries, Archives, and Knowledge Stewardship
  • Theme 4: Access, Sustainability, and the Political Economy of Publishing
  • Theme 5: Automation, AI, and the Mediation of Knowledge
